Air Freight in Rwanda

Fast, secure air cargo to and from Kigali, with customs clearance and delivery handled by one team.

Haraka Freight International arranges air freight in Rwanda for shipments that cannot wait for the sea and road journey from the coast. Air freight is part of our core freight services, alongside sea freight, trucking and customs clearing. We book the air cargo, prepare the documents, clear customs at Kigali and deliver to your door.

Because Rwanda is landlocked, sea freight always ends with a long road journey from Mombasa or Dar es Salaam. Air cargo into Kigali skips that leg completely, which makes it the natural choice for urgent, valuable and time-sensitive goods.

  • AOG (aircraft on ground) and pharma logistics on request

What travels best by air cargo

Air cargo to Rwanda makes the most sense for:

  • Urgent spare parts that keep machines, vehicles or aircraft running.
  • Electronics, phones and IT equipment, where value is high compared with weight.
  • Medical and pharmaceutical products, subject to the right approvals.
  • Fresh and perishable goods, including exports of produce and flowers.
  • Samples, documents and small consignments where speed matters more than price.
  • Project cargo with tight deadlines, where a delay costs more than the freight.

For larger, heavier or non-urgent cargo, we will tell you honestly when sea freight or road transport is the better option.

How air freight to Kigali works

  1. Quote. Send us the origin, the number of pieces, the weight and the dimensions of each package, and the cargo type.
  2. Booking and pick-up. We book space with the airline and coordinate collection from your supplier.
  3. Origin handling. The cargo is checked, labelled, screened and exported under the air waybill.
  4. Flight and tracking. We follow the shipment through any transit airport to Kigali.
  5. Customs clearance. We lodge the import declaration, settle duties and taxes on your behalf if agreed, and arrange any inspection.
  6. Delivery. We deliver to your office, warehouse or site in Kigali or elsewhere in Rwanda.

Air freight costs: what affects the price

We do not publish fixed air freight rates because they change with the market. The main factors are:

Factor Why it matters
Chargeable weight Airlines charge on the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight
Origin and routing Direct flights and transit connections price differently
Cargo type Dangerous goods, perishables and valuables need special handling
Service level Express and standard air freight have different rates
Season and capacity Rates rise when cargo space is in demand

Tip: packing goods compactly can reduce volumetric weight and lower the cost.

Documents for air cargo

  • Commercial invoice and packing list
  • Air waybill (we prepare or check it)
  • Certificate of origin, where it gives preferential duty
  • Permits or certificates for regulated goods, for example from the Rwanda Food and Drugs Authority (opens in a new tab)
  • Dangerous goods declaration, if applicable

Air freight Kigali: clearance and delivery

Air freight to Kigali is only fast if clearance is fast too. Our customs clearance team prepares the declaration before the flight lands, so the goods can be released and delivered as soon as possible after arrival. If you need the goods somewhere else in the region, we can carry them onward by road to Uganda, Burundi or eastern DRC.

Why choose Haraka for air freight

  • Combined solutions, such as urgent parts by air and the rest by sea.

Frequently asked questions

When should I choose air freight instead of sea freight?

Air freight suits cargo that is urgent, high in value, light for its size, perishable or needed to keep a project or production line running. For heavy, bulky or non-urgent goods, sea freight through Mombasa or Dar es Salaam followed by road transport is usually more economical.

How is air freight charged?

Airlines charge on whichever is greater, the actual weight or the volumetric weight, which is based on the size of the packages. Rates also depend on the origin, routing, cargo type and season. We quote each shipment individually.

Can you ship dangerous goods or perishables by air?

Dangerous goods can travel by air only when they are correctly classified, packed, labelled and declared under airline rules. Perishables need the right packaging and, for food and medical products, the right permits in Rwanda. Tell us what you are shipping and we will confirm what is possible.

Do you clear air cargo at Kigali?

Yes. We prepare the documents, lodge the customs declaration with the Rwanda Revenue Authority and arrange release and delivery from the airport.

Do you handle air freight exports from Rwanda?

Yes. We arrange export documentation, booking and delivery to the airport for goods leaving Rwanda.
