Tanzania to Goma freight
Goma faces the Rwandan town of Rubavu across the border at the northern end of Lake Kivu. From Tanzania, cargo travels across Rwanda to reach it. Rwanda's Rubavu Port on Lake Kivu, operational since December 2024, adds a lake option for trade with Goma (Rwanda Ministry of Infrastructure (opens in a new tab)).
Tanzania to Bukavu freight
Bukavu lies at the southern end of Lake Kivu, across from Rusizi in Rwanda. From Tanzania the road route enters Rwanda at Rusumo and crosses the south of the country to Rusizi.
Tanzania to DRC freight: road through Rwanda or across Lake Tanganyika?
Most Tanzanian goods for Goma and Bukavu go by road through Rwanda, because the truck can be loaded at the supplier and sealed until it reaches the DRC border. Western Tanzania also faces the DRC across Lake Tanganyika, so lake shipping can be worth considering for cargo heading to the Congolese lake shore. It means extra handling at each port and depends on vessel availability, so we compare it with road for each consignment rather than treating it as a standard option.
The document trail from Tanzania to the DRC
- Export from Tanzania. The supplier's export entry is lodged with the TRA, backed by the invoice and packing list.
- Transit through Rwanda. A transit entry covers the journey from Rusumo to the Rwanda–DRC border, with the cargo under customs control.
- Import into the DRC. The importer's declaration is handled with the DGDA, together with any product permits, certificates or inspections required for the goods.
Keep the consignee's name and details identical on all three stages. Mismatches are a common cause of delays at the DRC border.

Plans for this lane have to allow for sudden changes. Health measures, security incidents and political decisions have all affected the Rwanda–DRC crossings. In 2026 the Goma–Rubavu posts shut on 17 May, after an Ebola case was confirmed in Goma, and reopened about a month later with health screening (The EastAfrican (opens in a new tab)).
