Kenya to Burundi transport: choosing the route

Burundi closed its land border with Rwanda on 11 January 2024. The border has stayed closed to people, while goods were reported to be flowing in 2026 (KT Press (opens in a new tab)). That makes route planning the first step for every load.

Route Path When we use it
Via Uganda and Rwanda Kenya → Malaba/Busia → Uganda → Rwanda → Burundi When the Rwanda–Burundi crossing is workable for your cargo
Via Tanzania Kenya → Kenya–Tanzania border → Tanzania → Kobero/Kabanga → Burundi When routing through Rwanda is not practical

What we handle

Kenya to Bujumbura freight

Most of our Burundi deliveries go to Bujumbura, the main commercial city, on the shore of Lake Tanganyika. Deliveries to other towns can be arranged after clearance.

Paperwork that travels with the truck

Goods leave Kenya on an export entry lodged with the Kenya Revenue Authority (opens in a new tab) and enter Burundi on an import declaration assessed by the OBR. In between, the truck needs:

  • the Kenyan supplier's invoice and packing list, with the Burundian buyer named as consignee;
  • an EAC certificate of origin, if the goods are Kenyan-made and you want to claim the preferential rate;
  • transit entries for every country the truck crosses on the agreed route;
  • any health, phytosanitary or standards certificates required for the product in Burundi.

Kenya to Burundi logistics for regular shippers

Companies that ship from Kenya to Burundi every month have different needs from one-off buyers. For regular flows we can:

  • Fix a standard route and border post for your cargo, reviewed whenever conditions change.
  • Build a document template with your supplier, so each new invoice and certificate of origin is right first time.
  • Schedule pick-ups around your supplier's production and your stock levels in Bujumbura.
  • Combine part loads from several Kenyan factories into fuller trucks to lower the cost per tonne.
  • Hold buffer stock in our warehousing where the route allows, so a border delay does not leave your shelves empty.

Agreeing terms with your Kenyan supplier

Many Burundian buyers purchase "ex-works Nairobi" or "delivered to the border". Each choice moves cost and risk between buyer and seller. If you buy ex-works, you control the truck from the factory gate, which usually makes planning easier. If the supplier delivers, ask exactly where their responsibility ends and who handles the Burundi import entry. We are happy to review the terms before you sign.

Tips for Kenya to Burundi freight

  • Ask us about the route before you agree delivery dates with your buyer.
  • Make sure the certificate of origin is valid to claim EAC preferences.
  • Use one consignee name across every document.
  • Insure the load. It is a long road journey with several borders.

Kenya to Burundi shipments use our road freight, forwarding, clearance and cross-border teams together. Read Kenya to Burundi logistics for a broader guide, or compare with Tanzania to Burundi freight. If your Kenyan supplier ships through the port rather than by road, see East Africa to Burundi freight forwarding; for the customs side, Burundi customs clearance explains how the OBR declaration and the cargo tracking note fit into the plan.

Frequently asked questions

Which route does Kenya to Burundi transport take?

Cargo can travel through Uganda and Rwanda, or through Tanzania to the Kobero/Kabanga border. Because Burundi's land border with Rwanda has been closed to people since January 2024, we confirm the best routing before each shipment.

Are Kenyan goods duty-free in Burundi?

Goods that meet EAC rules of origin and carry a valid certificate of origin can benefit from duty-free treatment within the EAC Customs Union, which includes Burundi. Other charges may still apply.

Who clears the goods in Burundi?

The Office Burundais des Recettes (OBR) handles customs in Burundi.

Can you deliver part loads to Burundi?

Yes. LTL (less-than trailer load) services let smaller consignments share a truck.
