Dar es Salaam to DRC Freight: Moving Cargo to Eastern and Southern DRC
How cargo moves from the port of Dar es Salaam to the Kivus and to Haut-Katanga, the documents involved and how to plan for border and road conditions.

Haraka Freight International provides Dar es Salaam to DRC logistics for transit cargo to eastern Congo. We transit commodities to Goma and Bukavu, and the Central Corridor from Dar es Salaam is one of the main ways to get them there. As a Dar es Salaam DRC freight forwarder, we manage the port release, the long transit through Tanzania and Rwanda, and the border crossing into the DRC.
| Route | Path | Destination area |
|---|---|---|
| Central Corridor via Rwanda to Goma | Dar es Salaam → Tanzania → Rusumo → Rwanda → Rubavu / Goma | North Kivu |
| Central Corridor via Rwanda to Bukavu | Dar es Salaam → Tanzania → Rusumo → Rwanda → Rusizi / Bukavu | South Kivu |
| Via Zambia to the south-east | Dar es Salaam → Tanzania → Tunduma/Nakonde → Zambia → Kasumbalesa | Haut-Katanga (Lubumbashi) |
The Central Corridor Transit Transport Facilitation Agency (opens in a new tab) counts the DRC among its member states, alongside Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Malawi and Zambia.
Goma and Bukavu both sit on Lake Kivu, opposite the Rwandan towns of Rubavu and Rusizi. Cargo on the Central Corridor usually crosses Rwanda for the final leg. Rwanda's new Rubavu Port on Lake Kivu became operational in December 2024 as a trade gateway to Goma and North Kivu (Rwanda Ministry of Infrastructure (opens in a new tab)).
The Kivu provinces have faced repeated disruption from insecurity, political tension and health emergencies. In May 2026, the Goma–Rubavu crossings were closed for around a month after an Ebola case was confirmed in Goma (The EastAfrican (opens in a new tab)). We check the latest situation before every dispatch.
Lubumbashi and the mining region of Haut-Katanga are reached through Zambia rather than Rwanda. Our guide to Dar es Salaam to Lubumbashi freight explains how this corridor works. Contact us to discuss cargo for southern DRC.
DRC-bound cargo is in transit in Tanzania, and in Rwanda or Zambia, and is only imported when it reaches the DRC. That means a transit entry and guarantee in each country it crosses, closed again at each exit border, and an import declaration with the DGDA on arrival. A transit that is not closed properly keeps a bond open and can hold up later shipments, so we follow every one until it is discharged. Our guide to DRC customs clearance for transit cargo explains each step, and transit cargo from Dar es Salaam covers the port stage.
This route combines freight forwarding, road transport, customs clearance and cross-border logistics. Read Dar es Salaam to DRC freight for the importer's guide, or compare with Mombasa to DRC logistics.
After release at Dar es Salaam, cargo is trucked across Tanzania under transit control, enters Rwanda at Rusumo and crosses into the DRC at Rubavu–Goma or Rusizi–Bukavu, subject to current border conditions.
Lubumbashi is usually reached from Dar es Salaam through Tanzania and Zambia, entering the DRC at Kasumbalesa. Contact us to discuss your cargo and we will confirm the options.
Import clearance in the DRC is handled by its customs authority, the DGDA. Tanzania and Rwanda treat the cargo as transit.
Typically a bill of lading showing the DRC consignee, the commercial invoice, packing list, transit declarations and the importer's details, plus any cargo-tracking, permit or inspection documents required for your goods. We confirm the list before shipping.
We hold the cargo safely in transit or reroute where possible, and agree the plan with you. Border closures in the region have happened for health and security reasons, so we check conditions before dispatch.
