Tanzania borders eight countries, and the DRC is one of its most important regional trading partners. Tanzania to DRC logistics covers goods produced or stocked in Tanzania and sent overland or across the lake to Congolese buyers, as well as cargo moving inland from the coast. This guide explains the main routes, how customs works at each stage and how to plan transport around conditions in eastern DRC.

Three ways from Tanzania into the DRC

Route Path Main destinations
Road via Rwanda Tanzania → Rusumo → Rwanda → Rubavu or Rusizi → DRC Goma (North Kivu), Bukavu (South Kivu)
Road via Zambia Tanzania → Tunduma/Nakonde → Zambia → Kasumbalesa → DRC Lubumbashi, Kolwezi (south-east)
Lake Tanganyika Western Tanzania (e.g. Kigoma) → lake → DRC lake ports Towns on the Congolese shore of the lake

All three are used, but for different cargo and destinations. The DRC is a member of the Central Corridor Transit Transport Facilitation Agency (opens in a new tab), alongside Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Malawi and Zambia, so these routes fall within one regional framework.

Road via Rwanda

This is the main route to the Kivus. Trucks cross from Tanzania into Rwanda at Rusumo and drive across Rwanda to the DRC border: Rubavu for Goma at the northern end of Lake Kivu, or Rusizi for Bukavu at the southern end. Loading at the supplier and sealing the truck until the DRC border keeps handling to a minimum.

Road via Zambia

Cargo for Lubumbashi and the mining provinces travels south-west into Zambia and enters the DRC at Kasumbalesa. This route carries a lot of mining equipment and supplies. Read Dar es Salaam to Lubumbashi freight for more.

Lake Tanganyika

Western Tanzania faces the DRC across Lake Tanganyika. Lake shipping can suit some bulk and break-bulk cargo for towns on the Congolese shore. It involves extra handling at lake ports and depends on vessel availability, so it should be compared with road case by case.

Customs at each stage

Customs for Tanzania to DRC logistics follows the same pattern on every route:

  1. Export from Tanzania. The supplier lodges an export declaration with the Tanzania Revenue Authority (opens in a new tab), supported by the invoice and packing list. For goods that arrived at Dar es Salaam from overseas, the cargo is declared for transit instead.
  2. Transit. In Rwanda or Zambia, a transit entry opens at the entry border and closes at the exit border. Transit bonds or guarantees may be needed.
  3. Import into the DRC. Congolese customs, the DGDA (opens in a new tab), assesses the import entry; once charges are settled and any inspection is done, the consignment can be delivered.

Keep the consignee's details identical at every stage. Read how customs clearance works for transit cargo to the DRC for a detailed walkthrough.

Documents checklist

  • Commercial invoice and packing list from the Tanzanian supplier
  • Tanzanian export declaration, or transit declaration for port cargo
  • Transit documents for Rwanda or Zambia
  • Certificate of origin
  • DRC importer details
  • Permits, certificates or inspection documents required for the goods in the DRC

Choosing transport

Truck type. Containers need container trucks; palletised goods can go on box or curtain-side trucks; machinery may need flatbeds or lowbeds; perishables need reefers.

Full or part load. For smaller consignments, part loads (LTL) can be more economical. For high-value or sensitive goods, a dedicated truck sealed from origin to destination reduces risk.

Weight limits. Axle-load rules apply on the roads of every country crossed. Overloading can lead to fines and delays at weighbridges.

Risks and how to manage them

Changing conditions in the Kivus. Health alerts and security incidents can shut crossings overnight; the Rubavu–Goma posts, for instance, stayed shut for roughly four weeks from mid-May 2026 during an Ebola response (The EastAfrican (opens in a new tab)). Re-check before every dispatch.

Border congestion. Busy crossings can mean waiting time. Complete documents and early declarations reduce it.

Product rules. Food, medicines and chemicals need specific approvals in the DRC. Confirm them before the sale.

Payment and trade terms. Agree clearly where the seller's responsibility ends, and who pays for transit, bonds and insurance.

Tanzania to DRC logistics for small and medium traders

Not every shipment is a full container. Many Tanzania–DRC traders move a few tonnes at a time. Part loads (LTL) let these traders share trucks, and consolidation in a warehouse near the route can turn several small orders into one efficient load. The paperwork is the same in principle, so it pays to standardise it: one consignee format, one set of product descriptions and a checklist that every supplier follows. Traders who get these basics right usually find their shipments clear faster, because customs officers see consistent, complete documents every time.

Tanzania to DRC logistics: a planning checklist

  • Final destination in the DRC confirmed
  • Route chosen (Rwanda, Zambia or lake) and border post agreed
  • Trade terms and responsibilities agreed with the buyer or seller
  • Invoice, packing list and certificate of origin checked
  • Export or transit declaration prepared
  • DRC permits and importer details confirmed
  • Cargo insured
  • Border status checked on the day of dispatch

Planning Tanzania–DRC shipments with Haraka

With operations in Tanzania and Rwanda and regular transit cargo to Goma and Bukavu, our Tanzania to DRC freight service covers pick-up in Tanzania, export and transit documents, trucking across Rwanda, border coordination and hand-over for clearance in the DRC. For trucking practicalities, read road freight from Tanzania, and for port cargo see Dar es Salaam to DRC freight.

Conclusion

Tanzania to DRC logistics offers more choice than many importers realise: road through Rwanda for the Kivus, road through Zambia for the south-east, and the lake for some shoreline destinations. Pick the route that matches your destination and cargo, keep documents consistent across export, transit and import, and check conditions before every dispatch. Frequently asked questions

What are the main routes from Tanzania to the DRC?

By road through Rwanda to Goma or Bukavu, by road through Zambia to Lubumbashi and the south-east, and across Lake Tanganyika from western Tanzania to the Congolese lake shore.

Is this the same as shipping from Dar es Salaam to the DRC?

Not quite. Dar es Salaam to DRC freight usually involves containers in transit from the port. Tanzania to DRC logistics also covers goods made or stocked in Tanzania, which are exported from Tanzania before crossing to the DRC.

Who clears goods into the DRC?

The Direction Générale des Douanes et Accises (DGDA), the DRC's customs authority.

Can I use Lake Tanganyika for my cargo?

Possibly. It depends on the cargo, its packing and the vessel services available at the time. A forwarder can compare lake and road options.

How do I handle sudden border closures?

Check conditions before dispatch and work with a forwarder who can hold cargo safely or reroute if a crossing closes during transit.
